Book Description:

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.
Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago―has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind―and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?
Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

My Opinion:
LOVE IT! Yes, loved it. Absolutely and positively loved it. Cassandra pulled me in from the first moments of this book. She makes you feel everything for these characters. You get pulled in and cry from all the emotions that are dragged out of you, from reading this book. Will they, won't they?

Emma and Julian are two people you root for from the beginning. You can help but fall in love with the author, the writing and the characters in this book. This was my first Cassandra Clare book so I had no expectations as to what this book should have been or if it was like others in her shadow hunter series.  I haven't read any of her other shadowhunter series, but, I did see bits and pieces of the movie so I was familiar with Clary and Jace and do remember that in the ending I was wishing them to be together. They made a brief appearance in this book and there is some back story mixed into this tale. I did not feel lost with it tho and even appreciated that there were references to who they were.

Emma is trying to figure out who killed her parents and this book is woven into the who and why of it but as it develops all the characters come together and make this wonderfully written book. You fall in love with the Blackthorns and root for all the characters. This book is full of twists that most of the time you didn't see coming and they grip you and make you want more. This was a fun and exciting book and I will have to read more in the series. If any of her books are like this - I must read them!

I give this book 5 of 5 stars!

About the Author

Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Teheran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.
Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and  which later inspired her current pen name).
After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again.
Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her two cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.

  3. I have this book and have yet to read it! I have heard such amazing things! I have to try audible again. I can't do it at home, I have to be in the car - otherwise I can't concentrate!

  4. Great review, Mary! This is my first review I've read of yours and now I gobble all your blog up. I love this book as well and seeing someone who enjoyed it as much as me makes me happy! There definitely is a lot of angst with Clare's books, especially when there is a forbidden romance (as there is in every one of her series). I love the characters and where the story is leading. I am rereading the whole Shadowhunter Chronicles in anticipation for Queen of Air and Darkness. I hope you enjoy the rest of The Dark Artifices! Have a great week!

  7. That is great that you loved this, Mary! I recently read this as well. I didn't love it like you, but I think that is due to the fact that I couldn't read it quickly like I wanted to. I was drowning in homework! I was also spoiled a lot for the series, so it wasn't a thrill of a ride for me. Hopefully I'll have a better reading experience with the second one! I hope you love the sequel. :)

  8. Based on the synopsis, I was surprised to read that you found this book so emotional! (I LOVE angsty, emotional books that tug on the heart.) This is one of the reasons why I like reading reviews so much, and why it's so important to me. There's so much more to consider, and to be learned about any given book than what's in a synopsis! :)

  15. It's so interesting to read your review, seeing the perspective of someone who hasn't read the previous Shadowhunter books. I agree with you 100% that you're rooting for all the Blackthorns, I think they could all be protagonists in their own right, they have such distinct traits and fears and such. I hope you enjoy Lord of Shadows (If you haven't read it yet!), because I think it's even better!
