He saved her life…
But will he destroy her dreams?
Firefighter Rand Nelson is tall and handsome and has literally walked through an inferno for Beatrice Wilcox. He’s a hero…and that’s exactly the problem. Beatrice knows all too well the risks of loving a man with a dangerous career. But when Rand’s report threatens her beloved children’s camp, Beatrice can’t refuse his offer of help…even though she knows they’re both playing with fire.
GUEST POST!!
Seriously, when you see all this gear these guys and gals have strapped to their backs and that they carry INTO a fire, all I can think is how strong they have to be to perform their job.
In RESCUED BY THE FIREFIGHTER, Rand Nelson saves Beatrice Wilcox and little Eli Dunning from the raging forest fire. He carries Beatrice and Eli at the same time out of the fire.
When I researched the velocity of the pressure of just the fire hoses alone that these firefighters shoot at fires for long periods of time, I realized hoisting a woman and a skinny 6 years old would be a piece of cake.
I remember being in Scottsdale and a fire had raged out of control up near the Rim. There hadn’t been a lightning strike to cause the fire. It had been deliberately set by three kids. The fire burned valuable and beautiful forest land and many cabins and home that had been in that area for decades. The talk around Scottsdale then was angry. People wanted “those kids taught a lesson”.
I remembered that time and later Jed and I drove up north to see the devastation. Honestly, I cried. I couldn’t imagine what happened to the wildlife. I didn’t want to know.
I have a soul-felt appreciation for all of nature, but especially trees and forests. Seeing all that land reduced to charcoal for acres and acres was devastating to me. I heard stories about the firefighters and that two men had died.
All because three kids wanted attention from their parents.
That incident gave rise to my plot line of Chris Dunning, 10, accidentally causing the fire in the forest across from the children’s camp where he and his brother, Eli, were spending the summer after their father had been sentenced to prison and their mother had walked away and abandoned them. They were now part of the Foster Care System that had no parents for them. They were adrift, alone and afraid.
I didn’t want them to be the “bad” guys, and though the fire was an accident, they learned a valuable and unforgettable lesson as they planted new sapling trees in the burned out forest.
I don’t know what kind of retribution those three Arizona boys had to pay, but I hope that the judge ordered them to plant new trees. To be responsible for righting the wrong and to see that no matter what the mistake was, that new beginnings sometimes come from loss. Even when we are the cause of that loss. It’s up to us to rise up, make our amends and then create something good.
I hope you enjoy my story and when you can, say a prayer for the firefighters around the world.
