The Gathering
Bernadette Giacomazzo

(The Uprising, #1)
Publication date: March 31st 2018
Genres: Adult, Dystopian
The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved.
In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.

GUEST POST

Favorite Part of Writing The Gathering: Book One of The Uprising Series

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Evanora comes out to dance for the first time at the
Emperor’s Ball. I had a vision of a full New York high society debutante presentation, and just visuals of all the gorgeous white gowns and absolutely ethereal structures. The Baroque music in the background, the dancing in rhythm, and – in the middle of it all – Tommy and Evanora bonding, as true friends, as he reveals what all the Cabal had done to him and how he suffered at their hands. On one hand, they bonded over their mutual hatred of the same thing – The Cabal and, by extension, Emperor – but they also have a genuine affection for one another, as well. And the fact that there was all this brutality set against all this pure beauty is another juxtaposition I just adore.

Least Favorite Part of Writing The Gathering: Book one of The Uprising Series

My least favorite part to write was the second-to-last chapter in the book, when Emperor is ordering his guards to brutally beat Pualani for no reason except for the fact that she dared to exist in HIS New York. It was so hard to write – and so hard to watch a sweet girl that is so likable and intelligent – suffer at a madman’s hands, especially given the times we live in today, where there actually is a madman who, I don’t doubt, would do something exactly like this if given a chance.
