Lee’s teenage years were filled with more trauma and drama than anyone guessed. Though his damaged past has helped make him a successful police detective, it’s hurt every relationship he’s tried. But seeing the grown-up, stunning Jessie might just change his commitment-phobic mind.
Jessie’s psycho ex-husband had her convinced no one would ever love her, but Lee is ready to step out of the friend zone and into her heart. Can she learn to trust again before she loses her chance to turn her first crush into her last love?
Elizabeth McKenna’s novel will have you remembering the angst of high school, the grief of a failed relationship, and the joy of finding true love at last.
EXCERPT
At a party hosted by Sarah, they had their first big fight. After half a dozen beers, Billy
accused Jessie of flirting with Lee. Later in front of Billy’s house, Jessie turned off the car and
rested her aching head on the steering wheel. Billy hadn’t spoken to her since their public
shouting match at Sarah’s house. She was scared she’d blown her first real relationship all
because of a misunderstanding.
“Why, Jessie, why?” He slurred the question, and her name came out “Jeth-thee.”
“I wasn’t flirting. I pumped the keg for Lee, and we talked about the physics final next
week. It was no big deal.”
“Everyone says you still want him.” Slumped down in the passenger seat, he crossed his
arms and stared out the side window.
“Who’s everyone?” Jessie shut her eyes against the tears. She would not cry. “I’m dating
you, Billy. Lee and I are friends. I was talking to a friend.”
“It drives me crazy when I see you with other guys. And you were doing that thing with
your hair.”
“What thing?”
“You know. When you laugh and then push your hair behind your ear.”
“Oh. My. God. Are you kidding me? Have you looked at my hair? It’s like an alien life
form. I push it out of my face a billion times a day.”
Billy’s head flopped side to side. “It’s not the same thing. You were flirting.”
She didn’t know what to say to convince him she wasn’t, though she had liked talking to
Lee tonight. Since she had started dating Billy, she had avoided Lee at school and had even
stopped writing him notes in her calculator. Standing at the beer keg, she had realized how much
she had missed their friendship.
Billy looked at her. The soft glow from the street lamp made the tears in his eyes shine. “I
love you, Jessie.”
Every vital organ in her body seized up. She had often thought about the moment a boy
would declare his love for her, but instead of the expected elation, there was confusion. She had
believed she loved Lee, but was it love if it wasn’t returned? Did Lee love Tina despite their on-
again off-again psycho relationship? She didn’t see how all that drama could be love.
She had been dating Billy less than two months. How long did it take for infatuation to
turn into love? Not counting tonight, she had fun when they were together, but was that love?
She had to say something, so she went with honesty. “I like you. I like you a lot.”
Billy opened the door and fumbled for the curb with his feet. He grasped the top of the
door with one hand and pulled himself out of the car. “Don’t worry. You’ll learn to love me.”
